Understanding Your Values: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Written on

Chapter 1: The Quest for Values

Recently, I've found myself pondering a significant question: What are my values?

This reflection has emerged as I've shifted from a mindset focused on thoughts to one centered around values. This transition has sparked a multitude of queries in my mind. For instance, how many values should I hold? What if my values evolve over time? Does this value truly resonate with my identity?

These considerations often feel like I'm selecting items from a grocery list, trying to determine which values to adopt. However, I've come to realize that there isn't a straightforward guide for defining who we should become. Instead, values are more of an emotional compass than mere intellectual choices. They are not fixed; they grow and change alongside us, reflecting our present circumstances.

This raises the question: How can we select a few values to navigate our entire lives? What mattered to me as a teenager differs significantly from what I cherished in my twenties, and even now in my mid-thirties, my values continue to transform.

In the past, I held a rigid perception of my identity, heavily influenced by external elements like my upbringing, musical tastes, and social connections. This inflexible mindset stifled my ability to change. I felt a strong sense of certainty about who I was, but that very confidence became a barrier.

When it comes to defining my values, I nearly fell into a similar mindset. Establishing a fixed set of values in my thirties to guide me indefinitely seems unrealistic. How could I predict that my current values will remain unchanged as I reach my sixties? Ideally, my life experiences will bring new priorities that will reshape my values.

For me, embracing my values has shifted from adhering to a rigid framework to experiencing an internal sense of direction. It has become a personal check-in, allowing me to evaluate who I am and where I aspire to go. I am no longer confined by strict rules but am instead guided by my inner desires.
