This morning, while driving to a meeting, I found myself reflecting on a significant realization.
I had a bit of time on my hands, so I decided to jot down some thoughts using voice translation on Google Keep. Later, when I reviewed my notes, I thought, “This is a mess!” It wasn’t terrible, just needed some tweaking, but the central idea was evident.
Accomplishing even a single task is far more rewarding than a lengthy to-do list. The key reason behind this might not be immediately apparent. For the past few years, I’ve overlooked it, despite having practiced this concept previously.
The truth is, no one appreciates dishonesty—especially not your self-image. It despises being misled, and in turn, it resents you for it. All those motivational tactics, from colorful lists to sprawling spreadsheets, become nothing more than punchlines in your self-image’s comedy routine.
You’re likely aware of this because you consistently set yourself up for disappointment. Your self-image is taking notes, documenting every failure and diminishing your credibility as a result.
However, if you’re ready to embrace a straightforward approach, listen closely.
The simple solution is to choose just one action item and dedicate yourself to completing it today—just one.
Your mind might rebel against this idea, thinking, “I need an elaborate system to fix my life!” But that’s simply not true. You need to demonstrate to your self-image that you’re committed.
Historically, Dr. Maxwell Maltz's book, Psycho-Cybernetics, explores the concept of self-image. Dr. Maltz was a renowned plastic surgeon who puzzled over why his patients still felt inadequate after successful surgeries. He depicted self-image as a "mental blueprint" for oneself.
In my view, it’s akin to the mental film you replay in your mind—a summary of your life that surfaces during moments of stress or anxiety. This ties back to the importance of taking action.
When your internal narrative resembles a tragic film, your chances of success diminish. You reinforce a cycle of failure, and your self-image continues to project this dismal movie.
However, when you commit to performing one positive action daily, you capture your self-image’s attention. That’s when real change begins.
Your self-image has a flair for drama; it yearns to be the director and star of the most captivating documentary—your documentary.
