Navigating Our Autism Journey: Insights and Reflections

Chapter 1: Morning Moments

Last night was a bit restless for me, but luckily, Owen managed to sleep soundly. However, he did wake up when I got up for a bathroom break. From his room, I heard him repeating, "slept all night" and then asking for his "tablet." I explained that it was still quite early, and after a brief wait, he came to fetch his tablet. With a joyful proclamation of "Back to bed," he dashed off.

I prepared some cereal and milk for him, and his cheerful singing echoed throughout the house. He kept running over to ask me to look up videos, reminiscent of when he was younger. It’s fascinating how he often revisits those earlier moments, mirroring his past behaviors. Excitedly, he listed the activities he wanted to do this week while expressing his anticipation for school.

"Choose your brown shoes, yes," he exclaimed after putting them on. I prefer he doesn’t wear flip-flops to school, as they tend to slip off his feet. However, I allow him to pick which shoes he wants to wear. I feel grateful that he has several pairs that he enjoys now, especially recalling the times when finding even one pair that he would wear was a challenge. Shoes with laces often led to him tugging on them to adjust them, and other styles produced various reactions. Therefore, it’s a blessing that he now has many options he likes.

Soon enough, he was off to school, and it seemed like he returned in no time. He was in high spirits, eagerly counting down to Friday when he could go swimming. I assured him that if he continued to behave well, we would indeed go. I love that he’s beginning to understand that good behavior can lead to rewards.

He has been pulling on my hair to make it longer, but I believe he’s managing well with the changes. Tomorrow, I have a consultation regarding chemotherapy, which was postponed from July. I’m relieved to finally get the process started. I also plan to get another haircut to help Owen adjust to the upcoming changes.

I appreciate all the connections he’s forming and how he’s starting to mention other activities he’s interested in discussing. Each day presents its own set of challenges, but within those struggles, we find our greatest triumphs. Remember to carve out time for yourself while also making space for others—it can truly transform your life. Sending smiles to everyone and embracing those donut days!
